The Chiefs have waived 25-year old TE Brad Cottam.  Cottam played in 8 games (1 start) for the Chiefs last season and he caught 9 passes for 120 yards (13.3 avg).  He played in 24 games (8 starts) in his two years in K.C. in which he caught 16 passes for 183 yards (11.4 avg).  Cottam has a hard time staying healthy (which the Chiefs knew when they drafted him) and that’s the reason they are letting him go.  Not much of a loss here.

The Kansas City Chiefs waive Kolby Smith

The Chiefs have waived 25-year old RB Kolby Smith.  Smith played in 4 games (0 starts) for the Chiefs last season and he carried the ball 15 times for 33 yards (2.2 ypc) while also catching 2 passes for 9 yards (4.5 avg).  In his three years with the Chiefs, Smith played in 27 games (9 starts) in which he carried the ball 162 times for 540 yards (3.3 ypc) with 3 TD carries.  He also caught 34 passes for 209 yards (6.1 avg) for the Chiefs.  Smith wasn’t going to get much P.T. behind Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones in 2010 so this was essentially a favor done for him as he was quickly claimed off waivers by the AFC West divison rival Denver Broncos.

The Chiefs have released 25-year old running back Dantrell Savage.  Savage played in 5 games for the Chiefs last season and he carried the ball 10 times for 45 yards (4.5 ypc).  He also caught 7 times for 51 yards (7.3 avg) last season for the Chiefs.  Savage also helped out a tad on special teams as he returned 6 punts for 36 yards (6.0 avg) and 8 kickoffs for 160 yards (20.0 avg).  Savage played 2 years for the Chiefs appearing in 13 games in which he carried the ball 25 times for 98 yards (3.9 ypc) and he also caught 9 passes for 51 yards (5.7 avg).  Savage also returned 14 punts for 53 yards (3.8 avg) and 34 kickoffs for 793 yards (23.3 avg).  Despite his youth the Chiefs likely won’t miss him too much in the future if at all.

The Chiefs have released 27-year old WR Devard Darling.  Darling didn’t play at all last season for the Chiefs.  In 2008, Darling played in all 16 games for the Chiefs and he caught 17 passes for 247 yards (14.5 avg) with 1 TD grab.  Darling has now played in 35 games in his NFL career and he has caught 37 passes for 578 yards (15.6 avg) with 4 TD grabs.  The Chiefs won’t miss Darling at all as he didn’t do anything for them last season.

The Kansas City Chiefs release Mike Goff

The Chiefs have released 34-year old OT Mike Goff.  Goff played in 8 games (7 starts) for the Chiefs before his season ended because of a shoulder injury.  Goff has now played in 171 games (154 starts) in his NFL career and it appears to be nearing an end so the Chiefs wanted to go in a different direction with the tackle position for 2010.
