Kansas City Chiefs 14, San Diego Chargers 43

The Kansas City Chiefs (3-8) did not have much of a chance on Sunday against the San Diego Chargers (8-3) and they were blown out.  The Chiefs just could not get much going offensively, and they needed to put up a lot of points to keep up with the Chargers.  Matt Cassel threw for only 178 yards on 19/31 attempts, getting 1 touchdown and 1 interception.  The running game was effective, with Jamaal Charles running very well for 93 yards and a touchdown on only 14 carries, but he did lose a fumble.  The Chiefs fumbled 4 times and lost 3 of them, so they weren’t helping their cause much.  If the Chiefs didn’t find themselves down by so much, they could have fed the ball to Charles more and he probably would have found more success.

The Chargers offense had a field day with the Chiefs’ defense, racking up 426 total yards.  Philip Rivers sat back in the pocket and threw for 317 yards and 2 touchdowns on 21/28 attempts.  They ran for 94 yards as a team, but it was on 34 carries so the Chiefs did a pretty solid job slowing down their running game.  The Chargers built an early lead though and were up 35-7 early in the 3rd quarter, so the Chiefs were never really in this game.

The Chiefs made big plays when they had to and that’s why they won this game in a nutshell.  Matt Cassel was very efficient in this game as he completed 15 of 30 passes for 248 yards with 2 TD passes and 0 INTs.  Jamaal Charles was a gamebreaker for the Chiefs in this game as he returned 4 kickoffs for 158 yards (39.5 avg) with a 97-yard TD return.  He also carried the ball 17 times for 58 yards (3.4 ypc) and he also caught 2 passes for 8 yards (4.0 avg) with a TD grab.  Chris Chambers caught 4 passes for 119 yards (29.8 avg) including a long pass in O.T. that set up the game winning FG.  TE Leonard Pope pitched in with 2 catches for 26 yards (13.0 avg) with a TD.  The Chiefs only had the ball for 22:25 of this game but they still finished up with 282 total yards on offense (68 rushing, 214 passing) today.

The defense didn’t play well today as they gave up a lot of yards but they also made a lot of game altering plays that helped the Chiefs win this game.  LB Demorrio Williams led the way for the Chiefs today with 10 tackles.  Safety Mike Brown pitched in with 9 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss, 1 sack and 1 QB hit.  But, it was young DE Andy Studebaker who made the biggest difference for the Chiefs in this game as he had 6 tackles, 1/2 a sack, 2 passed defensed, 1 QB hit and he intercepted 2 passes that he returned for a combined 96 yards which set up short fields for the Chiefs’ offense.  The Steelers finished up with 515 total yards in this game (114 rushing, 401 passing).  The Chiefs are now 3-7 on the season.

Kansas City Chiefs 16, Oakland Raiders 10

The Kansas City Chiefs (2-7) got their second win of the year, taking down the Oakland Raiders (2-7) on Sunday.   The Raiders built a 10-3 lead after the first quarter.  Jamaal Charles had a very good game for the Chiefs and tied the game early in the second quarter on a great 44-yard touchdown run.  It was the Chiefs’ only touchdown of the game, but it was enough to go along with Ryan Succop’s three field goals.  Succop’s second field goal gave the Chiefs the lead in the second quarter and they would hold that lead the rest of the game.  Succop added some insurance points with another field goal in the fourth quarter.  Matt Cassel did not have a great game, failing to get in the endzone and throwing a pick.  He finished with the one interception and 216 yards on 19/34 attempts.  The Chiefs offense struggled and without Charles big run, they may have fell to the Raiders.  They also only went 1/15 on 3rd downs, but luckily for them they were playing the Raiders.

The Chiefs’ defense did a good job settling in and shut out the Raiders the rest of the game after the first quarter.  They figured out Raiders’ starting quarterback JaMarcus Russell pretty quick, and he was eventually replaced by Bruce Gradkowski.  Gradkowski was shut down by the Chiefs as well, and Mike Brown intercepted him twice.  They did not do a good job stopping the run though.  The Raiders got 182 rushing yards, including 119 yards from Michael Bush.  The Chiefs should not get too exciting about this win, as the Raiders are arguably the worst team in football.  They will need a much better performance if they want a chance of winning next week against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Jacksonville Jaguars 24, Kansas City Chiefs 21

The Chiefs fought hard today but it just wasn’t enough in the end.  Matt Cassel was solid for the Chiefs in this game as he completed 23 of 39 passes for 262 yards with 2 TD passes and 0 INTs.  Jamaal Charles didn’t get much of an opportunity to show what he can do in this game as he carried the ball 6 times for 36 yards (6.0 ypc) and he also caught 3 passes for 19 yards (6.3 avg).  Little used WR Lance Long had the best game of his NFL career today as he caught 8 passes for 74 yards (9.3 avg).  Dwyane Bowe pitched in with 4 catches for 74 yards (18.5 avg) in this game.  Chris Chambers had quite a debut for the Chiefs in this game with 3 catches for 70 yards (23.3 avg) with 2 TD grabs.  The Chiefs finished up with 301 total yards on offense (60 rushing, 241 passing) in this game despite only having possession of the football for 23:47.

The Chiefs’ D did not play too well in this game.  Rookie DE Tyson Jackson led the way for the Chiefs with 7 tackles.  The Jaguars finished up with 426 total yards in this game (173 rushing, 253 passing).  The Chiefs are now 1-7 on the season.

Kansas City Chiefs 7, San Diego Chargers 37

The Kansas City Chiefs (1-6) looked awful in their loss Sunday to the San Diego Chargers (3-3).  Matt Cassel threw three interceptions and only got 97 yards on 10/25 passes.  Cassel is not the only one to blame, since his offensive line gave him no time and Cassel was sacked four times.  Cassel hooked up with Dwayne Bowe on a seven yard touchdown pass in the 3rd quarter for the Chiefs only score of the game.  Running back Larry Johnson only got 49 yards on 16 carries (3.0 avg) but his backup Jammal Charles was one of the few bright spots for the Chiefs, gaining 33 yards on four carries (8.25 avg).

The Chiefs defense could not do anything to stop the Chargers offense.  Chargers quarterback Phillip Rivers threw three touchdowns, including two in the first quarter.  He finished the game with 268 yards on 18/30 pass attempts.  The Chargers’ running game also killed the Chiefs.  Going into this contest the Chargers were only averaging 58 rushing yards per game, one of the worst averages in the league.  They racked up 135 yards in this game though, with LaDainian Tomlinson leading the way with 71 yards on 23 carries (3.1 avg) and Darren Sproles adding 41 yards on five carries (8.2 avg).  The Chiefs topped off their terrible performance in the 4th quarter when the Chargers’ Jacob Hester blocked Dustin Colquitt’s punt and recovered it in the endzone for a touchdown.  The Chiefs have a bye this week.
