The Kansas City Chiefs release Lance Long

The Chiefs have released 25-year old WR Lance Long.  Long played in 7 games for the Chiefs last season and he caught 20 passes for 178 yards (8.9 avg).  This is a good sign for the Chiefs as Long just wasn’t that good.  They actually did him a favor by cutting him now as it gives him a chance to maybe hook on with another team before the season starts.

The Kansas City Chiefs waive Brad Cottam

The Chiefs have waived 25-year old TE Brad Cottam.  Cottam played in 8 games (1 start) for the Chiefs last season and he caught 9 passes for 120 yards (13.3 avg).  He played in 24 games (8 starts) in his two years in K.C. in which he caught 16 passes for 183 yards (11.4 avg).  Cottam has a hard time staying healthy (which the Chiefs knew when they drafted him) and that’s the reason they are letting him go.  Not much of a loss here.

The Kansas City Chiefs waive Kolby Smith

The Chiefs have waived 25-year old RB Kolby Smith.  Smith played in 4 games (0 starts) for the Chiefs last season and he carried the ball 15 times for 33 yards (2.2 ypc) while also catching 2 passes for 9 yards (4.5 avg).  In his three years with the Chiefs, Smith played in 27 games (9 starts) in which he carried the ball 162 times for 540 yards (3.3 ypc) with 3 TD carries.  He also caught 34 passes for 209 yards (6.1 avg) for the Chiefs.  Smith wasn’t going to get much P.T. behind Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones in 2010 so this was essentially a favor done for him as he was quickly claimed off waivers by the AFC West divison rival Denver Broncos.

The Kansas City Chiefs bring in TE Tony Moeaki in the third round

Blogged under Bloglockers, The Draft Report, Front Page, Big Chiefs News, General Chiefs Discussion by admin on Saturday 24 April 2010 at 2:19 pm

The Chiefs have picked TE Tony Moeaki out of Iowa with the 93rd overall pick of the NFL Draft (3rd round).  He is a nice target at 6′3″, 247 pounds and he has a good set of hands.  His pass catching is his lone asset though as he is not much of a blocker in the running game.  Moeaki played in 10 games (all starts) for the Hawkeyes last season and he caught 26 passes for 302 yards (11.6 avg) with 4 TD grabs.  He played in 48 games (15 starts) at Iowa in which he caught 72 passes for 838 yards (11.6 avg) with 11 TD grabs.  Moeaki is a injury prone player as he has never played every game in a season in college.  I think the Chiefs reached a bit for Moeaki but he fills a big need.

The Kansas City Chiefs pick OG Jon Asamoah in the third round

Blogged under Bloglockers, The Draft Report, Front Page, Big Chiefs News, General Chiefs Discussion by admin on Saturday 24 April 2010 at 2:13 pm

The Kansas City Chiefs have picked OG Jon Asamoah with the 68th pick overall (3rd round) of the NFL Draft.  Asamoah is a big guy at 6′4″, 300 pounds and he has the potential to add some weight to his frame.  He played in 12 games (all starts) at Illinois and he played in 42 games (37 starts) in his four years there.  Asamoah has no real weaknesses as he is a strong run and pass blocker.  He could also play center if the need arises for the Chiefs.  The Chiefs were lucky that Asamoah fell to them in the 3rd round and he could be a starting guard for them as early as this September.  This was another solid pick for the Chiefs.
