The Chiefs have released 26-year old TE Brad Cottam.  Cottam did not play last year due to injury.  Cottam played in 24 games (8 starts) in his three years with the Chiefs and he caught 16 passes for 183 yards (11.4 avg) with 0 TD grabs.  Cottam just couldn’t stay on the field due to his health which led to his release.  The Chiefs won’t miss him at all going forward.

The Chiefs have released 32-year old WR Chris Chambers.  Chambers played in 13 games (7 starts) for the Chiefs last year and he caught 22 passes for 213 yards (9.7 avg) with 1 TD grab.  He played in 22 games (16 starts) in his two years with the Chiefs and he caught 58 passes for 821 yards (14.2 avg) with 5 TD grabs.  The Chiefs have loaded up at WR in the off-season so they don’t need Chambers around anymore.

The Kansas City Chiefs keep and offensive lineman and they release another one

The Chiefs have re-signed 38-year old center Casey Wiegmann and they have released 34-year old guard Brian Waters.  Wiegmann played in 16 games (all starts) for the Chiefs last year.  He has now played in 127 games (all starts) in his first 8 years with the Chiefs.  Wiegmann has been a solid center and the Chiefs were smart to keep him around for another year.  Brian Waters played in 16 games (all starts) for the Chiefs last year and he has played in 163 games (154 starts) in his 11 years with the Chiefs.  Letting go of Waters had to be a tough decision for the Chiefs as he has been a solid player for them his whole career.

The Kansas City Chiefs sign WR Steve Breaston

The Chiefs have signed 27-year old WR Steve Breaston to a 5-year contract.  Breaston played in 13 games (11 starts) for the Cardinals last year and he caught 47 passes for 718 yards (15.3 avg) with 1 TD grab.  Those are amazing numbers to put up seeing how the Cardinals’ QBs really sucked last year.  Breaston also carried the ball 3 times for 35 yards (11.7 ypc) last year.  Breaston has now played in 60 games (26 starts) in his first four years in the NFL and he has caught 187 passes for 2,528 yards (13.5 avg) with 7 TD grabs.  He also has carried the ball 9 times for 96 yards (10.7 ypc) so far in his NFL career.  Breaston has also returned 113 punts for 885 yards (7.8 avg) with a TD return and he has returned 102 kickoffs for 2,220 yards (21.8 avg).  The Chiefs have the return game taken care of, so Breaston will only be a return man if the Chiefs suffer some injuries.  Chiefs’ QB Matt Cassel has to be really foaming at the mouth right now as the prospects of throwing the ball to Breaston, Dwayne Bowe, rookie WR Jonathan Baldwin and TE Tony Moeaki.

Christian Okoye was a nightmare for the opposition of the Kansas City Chiefs

Blogged under Blast from the Past,Bloglockers,Front Page,General Chiefs Discussion by admin on Wednesday 6 July 2011 at 4:56 pm

Christian “The Nigerian Nightmare” Okoye was a beast for the Chiefs before he had to retire due to multiple injuries.  Okoye dished out a lot of punishment as he loved to run over opposing players.  The punishment he gave out also cost him his career as he took a lot of shots too, which cut short his playing days.  Okoye played in 79 games in his six years with the Chiefs and he carried the ball 1,246 times for 4,897 yards (3.9 ypc) with 40 TD runs.  He also caught the ball 42 times for 294 yards (7.0 avg) for the Chiefs.  Okoye’s best year with the Chiefs was back in 1989.  Okoye carried the ball 370 times (led the NFL) for 1,480 yards (led the NFL) (4.0 ypc) with 12 TD runs.  He also caught 2 passes for 12 yards (6.0 avg) in 1989 with the Chiefs.  Okoye is #3 in Chiefs’ history in rushing yards (4,897) and he’s #4 in rushing TDs (40) in team history.  Okoye’s time with the Chiefs was short, but he sure made his mark.
