The Kansas City Chiefs bring in TE Tony Moeaki in the third round

The Chiefs have picked TE Tony Moeaki out of Iowa with the 93rd overall pick of the NFL Draft (3rd round).  He is a nice target at 6′3″, 247 pounds and he has a good set of hands.  His pass catching is his lone asset though as he is not much of a blocker in the running game.  Moeaki played in 10 games (all starts) for the Hawkeyes last season and he caught 26 passes for 302 yards (11.6 avg) with 4 TD grabs.  He played in 48 games (15 starts) at Iowa in which he caught 72 passes for 838 yards (11.6 avg) with 11 TD grabs.  Moeaki is a injury prone player as he has never played every game in a season in college.  I think the Chiefs reached a bit for Moeaki but he fills a big need.

The Kansas City Chiefs pick OG Jon Asamoah in the third round

The Kansas City Chiefs have picked OG Jon Asamoah with the 68th pick overall (3rd round) of the NFL Draft.  Asamoah is a big guy at 6′4″, 300 pounds and he has the potential to add some weight to his frame.  He played in 12 games (all starts) at Illinois and he played in 42 games (37 starts) in his four years there.  Asamoah has no real weaknesses as he is a strong run and pass blocker.  He could also play center if the need arises for the Chiefs.  The Chiefs were lucky that Asamoah fell to them in the 3rd round and he could be a starting guard for them as early as this September.  This was another solid pick for the Chiefs.

The Kansas City Chiefs bring in CB Javier Arenas in the second round

The Chiefs have selected CB Javier Arenas with the 50th overall pick (2nd round) of the NFL Draft.  Arenas is small at 5′9″, 192 pounds and he’s not the fastest player around running a 4.59 40.  But, he’s football fast and he really is solid in run support.  Arenas played in 13 games (all starts) for Alabama in which he finished with 71 tackles, he broke up 5 passes and he had 5 interceptions.  He played in 52 games (28 starts) in his four year career with the Crimson Tide he finished up with 154 tackles, he broke up 13 passes and he has six interceptions.  Arenas has seven career returns for TDs on special teams so he will help the Chiefs out in that facet of the game too.  Arenas is a good football player who will help the Chiefs’ secondary and special teams from day #1.

The Kansas City Chiefs select RB Dexter McCluster in the second round

The Chiefs have selected RB Dexter McCluster with the 36th overall pick (2nd round) of the NFL Draft.  McCluster is a small dude at 5′7″, 160 pounds but he is shifty and fast.  He can score from anywhere on the field at any time as he reminds me a little bit of Darren Sproles of the Chargers….but he’s a lot tougher than him.  McCluster played in 13 games (all starts) for Mississippi last season and he carried the ball 181 times for 1,169 yards (6.5 ypc) with 8 TD runs.  He also caught 44 passes for 520 yards (11.8 avg) with 3 TD grabs last season.  McCluster will be a weapon for the Chiefs who will move him all around the field to create mis-matches and he will not be asked to carry a heavy load in the running game with Thomas Jones and Jamaal Charles ahead of him on the depth chart at RB.  Look for the Chiefs to use McCluster as a return man in 2010 also.  He played in 40 games (29 starts) in his four years at Mississippi as he carried the ball 304 times for 1,955 yards (6.4 ypc) with 15 TD runs and he also caught 130 passes for 1,703 yards (13.1 avg) with 7 TD grabs.  Despite having other more pressing needs I can’t fault the Chiefs for picking the electric Dexter McCluster who is a big time playmaker.

The Kansas City Chiefs select S Eric Berry

Blogged under Bloglockers, The Draft Report, Front Page, Big Chiefs News, General Chiefs Discussion by admin on Thursday 22 April 2010 at 7:15 pm

The Chiefs have selected safety Eric Berry out of Tennessee with the 5th pick of the first round of the NFL Draft.  Berry is a tad small at 5′10″ but he has 205 pounds of ripped muscle on that frame.  Berry reminds me a lot of Ronnie Lott as he tries to blowup ballcarriers and receivers.  He is a good coverage safety who could also handle playing CB if the need arose for the Chiefs.  Berry played in 13 games (all starts) for Tennesse last season in which he had 87 tackles, he broke up 7 passes, had 2 interceptions, forced 1 fumble and he recovered 2 fumbles.  Berry gives the Chiefs a intimidating type player in the secondary which they have not had in a long, long time.  Berry played in 39 games (37 starts) in three years at Tennessee and he finished up with 245 tackles, he broke up 7 passes, had 14 interceptions (494 return yards), forced 2 fumbles and he has recovered 4 fumbles.  I love this pick for the Chiefs as new defensive co-ordinator Romeo Crennel now has a player to build around in Berry.
