The Kansas City Chiefs place RB Jackie Battle on I.R.

Blogged under Big Chiefs News,Bloglockers,Front Page,General Chiefs Discussion,Injury Reports by admin on Thursday 15 October 2009 at 7:40 pm

The Chiefs have placed running back Jackie Battle on the Injured Reserve List with a shoulder problem ending his season.  Battle played in all 5 games for the Chiefs this season and he carried the ball 7 times for 21 yards (3.0 ypc).  He also caught 2 passes for -3 yards (-1.5 avg) this season for the Chiefs.  This is not a huge loss for the Chiefs as Battle was #4 on the depth chart at running back for them.

The Kansas City Chiefs will get a fifth round pick from the Dolphins

The Chiefs have received a fifth round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft to complete the Tyler Thigpen trade.  This is pretty good value for the player who really had no future with the Chiefs as their #3 QB.  It almost never hurts to trade spare players for draft picks so this winds up being a solid move for the Chiefs.

Kansas City Chiefs 20, Dallas Cowboys 26 OT

Blogged under Bloglockers,Game Recaps,General Chiefs Discussion by Andrew on Monday 12 October 2009 at 7:41 am

The Kansas City Chiefs (0-5) built a 13-3 lead late into the 3rd quarter Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys (3-2), but it was not enough to keep the Cowboys away.  The Chiefs could not contain Roy Williams’ back-up Miles Austin, as the undrafted receiver had a record breaking day for the Cowboys.  Austin had two touchdowns and caught ten passes for 250 yards.  That is not typo, as the Chiefs secondary was awful today and let a bench player go for a franchise record 250 yards.  They also let Tashard Choice, another bench player, go for 92 yards on eight carries (11.5 avg) and a touchdown.

The Chiefs did have an impressive game-tying drive with under a minute left.  Matt Cassel drove the Chiefs down field and tied the game with a 16 yard touchdown pass to Dwayne Bowe with 24 seconds.  Cassel finished the day with two touchdown passes with 253 passing yards on 23/41 attempts (56%).  Cassel and the Chiefs could not continue that momentum into overtime though, as Romo and Austin hooked up and got a huge game winning 60-yard touchdown.  The Chiefs are not used to having a lead and completely blew it today, letting two bench players treat them like a Pop Warner team.  Austin proved he is a very talented receiver but an NFL team should never give up 250 yards to one receiver, especially when he isn’t even a regular starter.  The Chiefs will be looking for their first win next week against the Washington Redskins (2-3).

Kansas City Chiefs vs Dallas Cowboys preview

Blogged under Bloglockers,General Chiefs Discussion,This Week's Matchup Report by Andrew on Friday 9 October 2009 at 8:00 pm

The Kansas City Chiefs (0-4) are still without a win this season and are hosting the Dallas Cowboys (2-2) this Sunday.  The main problems that the Chiefs are having, is their run-defense and their passing offense.  Their run-defense is giving up 129 rushing yards per game and their passing offense is only averaging 145 yards per game.  The Chiefs have also not been getting enough production from their running back Larry Johnson, who has only rushed for 189 yards on 72 carries (2.6 avg) and has no touchdowns.  Back-up RB Jamaal Charles has looked good in limited carries, as he has 68 yards on 12 carries (5.7 avg), so maybe the Chiefs should give him a few more carries this game since the Cowboys are giving up 115 rushing yards per game.

The Chiefs’ defense needs to make sure they don’t let the Cowboys get a big early lead, as they will pretty much have no chance at coming back.  They need to control the clock and use their running game as much as possible, but they can’t do that if the Cowboys get a big early lead.  Matt Cassel needs to be more of a threat as well, as the Chiefs’ quarterback is only averaging 153 passing yards per game.  The Cowboys look like a much better team on paper than the Chiefs, but if they can stay close with the Cowboys they may be able to pull out a win.  I don’t think that will happen though, as the Cowboys are a much more talented football team and I think they will win pretty convincingly.

FINAL SCORE PREDICTION:  Kansas City Chiefs 17, Dallas Cowboys 31

New York Giants 27, Kansas City Chiefs 16

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Game Recaps,General Chiefs Discussion by admin on Sunday 4 October 2009 at 11:23 pm

The Chiefs were overmatched again in this game as they were down 27-3 in the 4th quarter before they showed any heart.  Matt Cassel completed 15 of 32 passes for 127 yards with 2 TD pass and 0 INTs.  He also carried the ball 4 times for 25 yards (6.3 ypc).  But Cassel has to do a better job of holding onto the football as he fumbled the ball three times against the Giants (he didn’t lose any of them).  Larry Johnson rushed for 53 yards on 18 carries (2.9 ypc) in this game.  TE Sean Ryan led the way in the passing game for the Chiefs with 5 grabs for 58 yards (11.6 avg) with a TD.  The Chiefs only finished up with 193 total yards in this game (105 rushing, 88 passing).

The Chiefs were led on defense by Demorrio Williams (9 tackles, pass defensed) and Mike Brown (9 tackles, sack, tackle for a loss and a QB hit).  The Giants rolled up 429 total yards on offense (156 rushing, 273 passing) in this game.  The Chiefs are now 0-4 on the season.

Kansas City Chiefs vs. New York Giants

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Chiefs Discussion,This Week's Matchup Report by admin on Friday 2 October 2009 at 8:42 pm

The Giants will likely come out just like they did last week.  They will try to control the clock with the running game and then punch the Chiefs in the mouth through the air.  The Chiefs are allowing 119.3 yards rushing per game but only 3.8 yards per carry so Brandon Jacobs (196 yards rushing) and Ahmad Bradshaw (201 yards rushing) will likely be fighting for every yard on Sunday.  But they can handle that.  WRs Steve Smith and Mario Manningham match up very well with the Chiefs’ secondary which is allowing 243.0 yards passing per game this season.  Eli Manning should have time to throw the ball as he has only been sacked 1 time this season while the Chiefs only have 3 sacks on the year.

The Giants only gave up 86 total yards last week against the Bucs.  But they have given up 142.0 yards rushing per game and 6.1 yards per carry so the Chiefs should really consider giving Larry Johnson and Jamaal Charles a lot of work in this game.  If the Chiefs get a running game going in this game that will give Matt Cassel a chance to use some play action passes down the field.  It all depends on if Dwayne Bowe is ready to play or not.  If he does Cassel will have a big target down the field.  If Bowe doesn’t play the Giants will probably double Bobby Wade and make the Chiefs beat them with Mark Bradley.

PREDICTION:  GIANTS 27, CHIEFS 13

Bobby Wade is off to a good start for the Kansas City Chiefs

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Chiefs Discussion,Stepping Up by admin on Friday 2 October 2009 at 9:21 am

Bobby Wade signed with the Chiefs after the first week of the year and he has stepped right in and played well.  Wade has caught passes for 85 yards (10.6 avg) with 1 TD grab.  He also stepped in as the punt returner and he has returned 8 punts for 72 yards (9.0 avg) this season.  The Chiefs were very, very lucky to find a player like Bobby Wade sitting on his couch after the season started.

Larry Johnson needs to pick it up for the Kansas City Chiefs

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Chiefs Discussion,Needs to Step Up by admin on Friday 2 October 2009 at 9:18 am

Larry Johnson needs to pick up the pace if he wants to remain the featured back of the Chiefs.  Johnson has carried the ball 54 times for 136 yards (2.5 ypc) and he also caught 4 passes for 47 yards (11.8 avg) this season.  With Jamaal Charles lurking on the bench for the Chiefs, Johnson better get things going soon as head coach Todd Haley owes him nothing and would not hesitate benching him.
