The Kansas City Chiefs will likely be without QB Brodie Croyle for a while

The Chiefs will likely be without starting QB Brodie Croyle for 2-3 weeks with a separated shoulder.  Croyle completed 11 of 19 passes (57.9%) for 88 yards with 0 TDs and 0 INTs (69.6 QB Rating) in this season opener at New England last Sunday.  Croyle has never been the most durable QB around as he was very injury prone at Alabama.  Veteran QB Damon Huard will start while Croyle is out.  He completed 8 of 12 passes (66.7%) for 118 yards with 1 TD pass and 1 interception (91.7 QB Rating) against the Patriots as he played well.  The Chiefs considered getting rid of Huard in the off season which would have been a poor move.  Look for Huard to play well enough to consider letting him start the rest of the season instead of the vastly overrated Croyle.

New England Patriots 17, Kansas City Chiefs 10

The Chiefs put up a good fight with the Patriots last Sunday afternoon and they might have ruined the season for them when safety Bernard Pollard hit Tom Brady and tore his ACL.  But, the Chiefs also had a QB injured in this game as starting QB Brodie Croyle separated his right shoulder which will cause him to miss the next 2-3 weeks.  He completed 11 of 19 passes for 88 yards before leaving the game.  Veteran Damon Huard almost led the Chiefs to victory as he played well completing 8 of 12 passes for 118 yards with 1 TD pass and 1 interception.  Larry Johnson had a heavy workload against the Patriots as he carried the ball 22 times for 74 yards (3.4 ypc).  Rookie Jamaal Charles was also effective running the football with 28 yards rushing on 5 carries (5.6 ypc).  TE Tony Gonzalez led the way in the passing game for the Chiefs with 6 grabs for 55 yards (9.2 avg).  WR Dwayne Bowe was also busy with 5 catches for 49 yards (9.8 avg) against the Patriots.  The Chiefs finished up this game with 102 yards rushing on 27 carries (3.8 ypc) and they also completed 19 of 31 passes for 182 yards.

The Defense gave a so-so effort against the Patriots on Sunday.  Safety Jarrad Page had a solid game leading the way for the Chiefs in this game with 7 tackles and a fumble recovery.  Linebacker Pat Thomas pitched in with 7 tackles.  The Patriots finished up with 126 yards rushing on 28 carries (4.5 ypc) and they also completed 20 of 29 passes for 212 yards.  The Chiefs need to improve on both sides of the ball if they want to win some games this season.

The over/under for Kansas City Chiefs wins in 2008 is six

The Chiefs might have the worst QB/head coach combination in the NFL so I have to side with the under here.  Despite having a good draft I don’t think the team will be any better on the field of play.  Remember, all was not good in the offseason as the Chiefs traded the best player (Jared Allen) on the entire roster.  Four wins in 2008 would be a miracle from God so bet the under.

Kansas City Chiefs vs. New England Patriots

The Chiefs couldn’t have picked a worse team to play in the season opener.  The Patriots have a run stuffing defense and that is what you know Herman Edwards will want his team to do.  Larry Johnson will need the offensive line to control the line of scrimmage against the Patriots and I don’t see that happening.  NT Vince Wilfork will clog the middle of the defense and DE Ty Warren is one of the best run defenders at his position.  Rookie inside linebacker Jared Mayo and veteran insider Tedy Bruschi will likely help stuff Larry Johnson in this game.  The Chiefs would be smarter to come out throwing the football as the Patriots secondary is very vulnerable right now.  The Chiefs would have to keep OLBs Mike Vrabel and Adalius Thomas out of the backfield to allow Brodie Croyle time to throw the ball.  Dwyane Bowe and Tony Gonzalez could have big games against the Patriots if Herman Edwards allows them to.

The Patriots will likely be able to do whatever they want on offense in this game.  The Chiefs have a young, but talented secondary but the Patriots receivers know all of the tricks.  Look for Randy Moss to have a huge game but Wes Welker will catch more passes than him.  The Patriots might also run the ball more than usual in this game to protect Tom Brady’s health.  Laurence Maroney, Sammy Morris and LaMont Jordan would likely all be effective against the Chiefs’ defense.  That is unless rookie DT Glenn Dorsey is the real deal.

PREDICTION:  NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS 38, KANSAS CITY CHIEFS 10
