6. (170) Barry Richardson, OT

The Chiefs must not have watched Barry Richardson play much before they drafted him.  He is 6′6″, 331 pounds but he’s really soft.  He’s a finesse blocker and he won’t help much in the running game until he grows tougher.  Richardson played in 49 games (46 starts) at Clemson.  Richardson doesn’t have a lot of upside as he projects into nothing more than a career backup.

5. (140) Brandon Carr, CB

The Chiefs started to get cute here and reach into a small school for an athlete.  Carr is 6′0″, 207 which is pretty big for a corner.  He was a playmaker in college as he had 11 interceptions and he broke up 37 passes the last three years at Grand Valley State.  Carr will likely have to make his money on special teams but he could do more than that if he can handle the jump in competition.  This pick was a huge reach for the Chiefs as not many experts projected Carr to be drafted at all.

4. (105) William Franklin, WR

Despite being 6′0″, 203 pounds William Franklin is soft.  But, he runs a 4.44 40 and can get down the football field very quickly.  His speed is the only real asset Franklin brings to an offense as he doesn’t like going over the middle or helping out the running game with his blocking.  Franklin played in 48 games (36 starts) at Missouri and he caught 143 passes for 2,125 yards (14.9 avg) with 14 TD grabs.  If Franklin gets some courage he can be a good weapon for the Chiefs but we’ll see what happens with him.  He does have a nice upside.

3. (82) DaJuan Morgan, S

The Chiefs were happy to see DaJuan Morgan waiting for them in the 3rd round.  He only started one season at North Carolina State but he can play both corner and safety.  Morgan appears more comfortable at safety and he really brings the pop against the run.  He can be fooled by QBs at times but he will learn with experience as he is a very hard worker.  Morgan played in 36 games (12 starts) at North Carolina State and he made 225 tackles, broke up 15 passes, had 6 interceptions and he forced 2 fumbles.  Look for Morgan to win a starting job at some point in 2008 and he will really help them on special teams from Day #1.  Morgan was an outstanding pick for the Chiefs.

3. (76) Brad Cottam, TE

I know that Tony Gonzalez is getting up there in age but the Chiefs could have waited until later if they really wanted Cottam.  Cottam is 6′4″, 270 pounds and he runs a 4.6 40.  Cottam is a good run blocker and receiver when he’s healthy which isn’t often.  That’s the rub with Cottam as he only started 7 games in college in 4 years!  Cottam played in 38 games (7 starts) at Tennessee and he caught 21 passes for 341 yards (16.2 avg) with 1 TD grab.  I have a feeling that the Chiefs might be drafting another TE next season as Cottam has bust written all over him.
