3. (73) Jamaal Charles, RB
The Chiefs probably didn’t need a running back at this pick but they felt that Charles was too good to pass up. Charles is 5’11″, 205 pounds but he might be the fastest running back in this draft as he can run a 4.4 40. He can take any handoff or pass to the house for six points. Charles doesn’t do his best work between the tackles as he likes to get outside and outrun defenders. Charles played in 38 games (17 starts) at Texas and he carried the ball 533 times for 3,328 yards (6.2 ypc) with 36 TD runs. He also caught 49 passes for 539 yards (11.0 avg) with 3 TD grabs. Charles might also get a chance to return some kickoffs. Despite not needing a running back the Chiefs made a really good pick here as Charles will be a nice insurance policy for Larry Johnson.
