Kansas City Chiefs vs. Oakland Raiders

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Chiefs Discussion,This Week's Matchup Report by dawgpounded on Friday 19 October 2007 at 9:31 pm

The Kansas City Chiefs got off to a rough start this season losing their first two games but they have rebounded winning three of the last four contests.  The Raiders have played much better than many thought they would as they are 2-3 right now.

The Chiefs will no doubt come off the bus running the football with Larry Johnson (394 yards rushing, 3.4 ypc) against a Raiders defense that is allowing 144.8 yards rushing and 5.6 yards per carry this season.  After the Chiefs establish the running game look for them to throw the ball deep to Dwayne Bowe and Jeff Webb.  Damon Huard must be careful when throwing the ball towards Tony Gonzalez as linebackers Thomas Howard (4 INTs) and Kirk Morrison (3 INTs) have been making big plays over the middle of the football field.

The Raiders will also look to run the ball with LaMont Jordan (466 yards rushing) and Justin Fargas (6.0 ypc) against a Chiefs defense that is allowing 117.7 yards rushing per game and 4.3 ypc.  The Raiders need to have a good running game against the Chiefs or they will have a hard time passing the ball.  That’s because the offensive line has allowed 16 sacks already this season and DE Jared Allen of the Chiefs is on fire as he already has 6 sacks this season despite missing a big chunk of the season to a league suspension.

PREDICTION:  The Chiefs will have a big game on offense and the Raiders won’t be able to keep up.  CHIEFS 27, RAIDERS 17.

The Kansas City Chiefs trade RB Michael Bennett to the Buccaneers

Blogged under Big Chiefs News,Bloglockers,Front Page,General Chiefs Discussion by dawgpounded on Wednesday 17 October 2007 at 4:50 pm

The Chiefs have traded Michael Bennett to the Bucs for conditional draft picks in both the 2008 and 2009 Draft.  Bennett played in 6 games this season for the Chiefs and he carried the ball 20 times for 52 yards (2.6 ypc) and he also caught 10 passes for 47 yards (4.7 avg).  What this means is that Priest Holmes could be ready to play football again as he returned to practice today.  If that is the case this was a great trade for the Chiefs as Holmes is 10 times the player that Michael Bennett is.

Kansas City Chiefs 27, Cincinnati Bengals 20

The Chiefs jumped the Bengals early in this game and they made it stand.  Damon Huard had his best game of the season as he completed 25 of 35 passes for 264 yards with 2 TD passes and 0 INTs.  Larry Johnson also had a good game as he carried the ball 31 times for 119 yards (3.8 ypc) with 1 TD run and he also caught 2 passes for 24 yards (12.0 avg).  TE Tony Gonzalez was off the charts against the Bengals as he caught 9 passes for 102 yards (11.3 avg) with 2 TDs.  WRs Jeff Webb (7 rec, 78 yards) and Dwyane Bowe (4 rec, 46 yards) each had solid games.  The Chiefs finished with 121 yards rushing on 34 carries (3.6 ypc) and they also completed 25 of 35 passes for 233 yards.

The defense gave up a lot of yards today but they also made their share of big plays as Carson Palmer turned the ball over 3 times.  Donnie Edwards (9 tackles) and Jared Allen (3 tackles, 2.5 sacks) were the big difference makers on the defense today.  The Bengals finished up with 78 yards rushing on 18 carries (4.3 ypc) and they also completed 26 of 43 passes for 295 yards.

Kansas City Chiefs vs. Cincinnati Bengals

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Chiefs Discussion,This Week's Matchup Report by dawgpounded on Thursday 11 October 2007 at 10:36 pm

This should be a good football team between to desperate teams that really need a victory.  The Bengals have lost three games in a row and they have allowed 109 points during the losing streak.  The Chiefs are sitting a 2-3 and they need to play better on offense at home as they have only scored 20 points in 2 games there.

The Bengals will get RB Rudi Johnson for this game and it couldn’t come at a better time.  The Chiefs are allowing 125.6 yards rushing per game and 4.2 yards per carry so the Bengals might try to pound them some on the ground to keep the defense on the sideline.  But it’s also very likely that Carson Palmer will try to light up the sky and essentially take Larry Johnson out of the Chiefs game plan by making them play from behind.  WRs Chad Johnson (28 rec, 495 yards, 3 TDs) and T.J. Houshmandzadeh (39 rec, 360 yards, 5 TDs) will have a big speed advantage on the corners of the Chiefs.

Damon Huard’s MRI came back o.k. and he will start this week against the Bengals and that’s a good thing.  The Chiefs will try to get Larry Johnson (275 yards rushing, 3.3 ypc) to keep control of the football and keep the Bengals offense on the bench.  Look for Huard to be able to get the ball to TE Tony Gonzalez (29 rec, 338 yards, TD) and WR Dwyane Bowe (22 rec, 369 yards, 3 TDs) often against the Bengals defense which is allowing 251.0 yards passing per game.

PREDICTION:  This will be a high scoring game but I have a hunch that the Chiefs will be inspired and win this game by a field goal.

The start of the Brodie Croyle era is approaching for the Kansas City Chiefs

Blogged under Big Chiefs News,Bloglockers,Front Page,General Chiefs Discussion,Injury Reports by dawgpounded on Tuesday 9 October 2007 at 11:41 am

Damon Huard injured his shoulder last week and he had to leave the football game.  He won’t be able to play this week either so Herman Edwards will get his wish as he wanted to start Brodie Croyle all along.  Croyle will get to face one of the worst defenses in the NFL (Cincinnati Bengals) so chances are he will look good in his starting debut.  Croyle has completed 10 of 17 passes (58.8%) for 138 yards with 1 TD pass and 0 INTs (104.5 QB Rating).  Huard will have a hard time getting his job back when his shoulder is 100%.  He has completed 97 of 149 passes (65.1%) for 1,029 yards with 4 TD passes and 6 interceptions (77.3 QB Rating).

Jacksonville Jaguars 17, Kansas City Chiefs 7

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Game Recaps,General Chiefs Discussion by dawgpounded on Monday 8 October 2007 at 3:14 pm

The Chiefs looked pathetic yesterday as the Jaguars punched them in the mouth on there own football field.  The Chiefs couldn’t get anything going on the ground as Larry Johnson only carried the ball 9 times for 12 yards (1.3 ypc) and he also caught 5 passes for a whopping 3 yards (0.6 avg).  TE Tony Gonzalez had a solid game as he led all Chiefs’ receivers with 8 grabs for 100 yards (12.5 avg).  Rookie WR Dwyane Bowe (4 rec, 70 yards) and Samie Parker (2 rec, 28 yards, TD) both also pitched in on the passing attack.  Damon Huard left the game with an injured shoulder but he didn’t play that well as he completed 19 of 30 passes for 196 yards with 1 interception.  Brodie Croyle relieved him and he completed 6 of 13 passes for 83 yards with a TD pass on the last play of the football game.

The defense got pushed around by the Jaguars yesterday who had possession of the football for a stunning 36:43 of the football game.  The Jaguars rushed for 156 yards on 35 carries (4.5 ypc) and they also completed 20 of 27 passes for 201 yards.

Kansas City Chiefs vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Chiefs Discussion,This Week's Matchup Report by dawgpounded on Friday 5 October 2007 at 10:36 am
This game will be a battle of two teams that prefer to run the football and play defense.  Both teams are on two game winning streaks and the Jaguars have had two weeks to get ready for this football game.  But, it’s at Arrowhead Stadium which should work big-time in the Chiefs favor.

The Chiefs run defense is soft as they allow 118.0 yards rushing per game and 4.2 yards per carry so expect the Jaguars to attack them on the ground.  Look for Fred Taylor (156 yards) rushing and Maurice Drew (100 yards rushing) to battle the solid linebacking crew of the Chiefs early and often.  The Chiefs must also spy on QB David Garrard who is not scared to run the ball.  He has 21 carries for 99 yards (4.7 ypc) so far this season.  The Chiefs have a solid pass defense as they allow 167.8 yards per game and they hold opposing QBs to a 62.6 Rating so far this season.  The dangerous thing about the passing game of the Jags is that Garrard that he spreads the football around because he doesn’t have a #1 WR.

The Chiefs would be smart to attack the Jags thru the air.  The reason for that is because the Jags have a solid run defense as they have only allowed 64.5 yards rushing per game over the last two games.  But, you just know that Edwards will give the football to Larry Johnson often as he has 263 yards rushing this season.  If the Chiefs’ offensive line gives Damon Huard time to throw the ball he should have success.  With Dwyane Bowe (18 rec, 299 yards, 3 TDs) and Eddie Kennison returning this week the Chiefs should be able to put pressure on the Jags defense down the field.  That will also open up the middle of the field for TE Tony Gonzalez (21 rec, 238 yards, TD) who should have a big game.

PREDICTION:  Look for this to be an outstanding football game.  But, I think the Chiefs will feed off of the home crowd and beat the Jaguars by a field goal.

The Kansas City Chiefs are expecting big things from return man Eddie Drummond

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Chiefs Discussion by dawgpounded on Friday 5 October 2007 at 10:15 am

With Dante Hall off to a fast start for the Rams the Chiefs are left expecting more from Eddie Drummond.  Drummond has been one of the better return men in the NFL the last few seasons so he’s likely about to break some long returns soon.  With the offense struggling a bit this season Drummond could be a big help by getting them good starting field position.  Drummond has returned 7 punts for 59 yards (8.4 avg) and 13 kickoffs for 280 yards (21.5 avg).

Kansas City Chiefs 30, San Diego Chargers 16

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Game Recaps,General Chiefs Discussion by dawgpounded on Monday 1 October 2007 at 1:33 am

The Chiefs got a big win on the road in San Diego yesterday.  Damon Huard was sharp as he completed 17 of 29 passes for 284 yards with 2 TD passes and 2 interceptions.  Larry Johnson broke out of his funk with a good game as he carried the ball 25 times for 123 yards (4.7 ypc) and he also caught 3 passes for 25 yards (8.3 avg).  WR Dwyane Bowe (8 rec, 164 yards, TD) and TE Tony Gonzalez (5 rec, 71 yards, TD) were explosive especially in the 2nd half of the game.  The Chiefs finished up with 126 yards rushing on 28 carries (4.5 ypc) and they also completed 17 of 29 passes for 264 yards.

Safety Jarrad Page (10 tackles, fumble recovery) and linebacker Napoleon Harris (10 tackles) led the way for the Chiefs’ defense.  But it was reserve CB Tyron Brackenbridge who made the biggest play when he returned a fumble 50 yards for a TD late in the game.  The Chargers rushed for 133 yards on 24 carries (5.5 ypc) and they also completed 21 of 42 passes for 200 yards.
