The Kansas City Chiefs are loaded at running back
Larry Johnson is holding out but it’s likely that he will sign soon. The great news for the Chiefs and their fans is that Priest Holmes is in Training Camp and he’s planning on playing this season. Still, Johnson will be the main man again this season for the Chiefs. Johnson played in all 16 games last season and he carried the ball 416 times for 1,789 yards (4.3 ypc) with 17 TD runs. He also caught 41 passes for 410 yards (10.0 avg) with 2 TD catches. Look for the Chiefs to give Priest Holmes/Michael Bennett some carries to keep Johnson fresh this season. Johnson has now played in 48 games (28 starts) and he has carried the ball 892 times for 4,205 yards (4.7 ypc) with 47 TD runs. He also has caught 97 passes for 1,033 yards (10.6 avg.) with 5 TD grabs.
Priest Holmes has not played football in a year and a half due to a neck injury. The Chiefs hope that Holmes can make it all the way back as he has been a dynamic running back in the NFL. He has played in 109 games (80 starts) and he has carried the ball 1,734 times for 8,035 yards (4.6 ypc) with 86 TD runs. He also has caught 334 passes for 2,945 yards (8.8 avg) with 8 TD grabs.
Michael Bennett will likely slide back to the #3 running back on the depth chart. Bennett played in 11 games (0 starts) for the Chiefs last season and he carried the ball 36 times for 200 yards (5.6 ypc) with 0 TD runs. He also caught 9 passes for 77 yards (8.6 avg) with 0 TD grabs. Bennett will likely be upset if he doesn’t get to play very much because he’s a good football player. Bennett has played in 75 games (49 starts) in his NFL career and he has carried the ball 749 times for 3,374 yards (4.5 ypc) with 12 TD runs. He also caught 135 passes for 1,117 yards (8.3 avg) with 5 TD grabs.
Rookie Kolby Smith was a good college running back but he likely won’t get to play too much as a rookie. Remember Smith for the future though as Bennett and Holmes are getting up there in years.
