3. (82) DeMarcus “Tank” Tyler, NT/DT

The Chiefs have needed help on the interior of their defense for a long time and Tyler should help out in there.  Tyler is a big guy at 6′2″, 323 pounds but his play is limited to in the box as he doesn’t have much speed.  But if he’s focused he will demand a lot of double teams which should help keep the linebackers clean to make plays.  In 48 games (27 starts) at North Carolina State, Tyler made 136 tackles, 19 tackles for a loss, had 5 sacks and forced 2 fumbles.  This could wind up being a pick that helps the Chiefs soon.

The Kansas City Chiefs trade kicker Lawrence Tynes to the Giants

You had to feel that Tynes days were numbered when he missed a chip shot field goal in the playoffs against the Colts.  And when they drafted Justin Medlock in April the handwriting was on the wall.  Tynes connected on 24 of 31 (77.4%) of his field goal attempts and 35 of 36 extra point attempts.  Over his three year career with the Chiefs, Tynes has made 68 of 87 (78.2%) of his field goal attempts and 137 of 141 extra points.  The Chiefs will receive and undisclosed future draft choice for Tynes.

2. (54) Turk McBride, DT

This was a huge reach by the Chiefs, but it fills a big need on the team.   It’s possible that the Chiefs are looking at McBride as more of an end than a tackle, because he’s not strong enough to stand up to a power running game in the Pros.  Many had McBride going in the 3rd or 4th round because he was only a 1-year starter at Tennessee.  McBride is a little small for tackle at 6′3″, 285 and he’s a little too slow (5.0 40) to handle DE.  In 43 games at Tennessee (17 starts), McBride made 121 tackles, 20.5 tackles for a loss, had 6.5 sacks, batted down three passes, forced 3 fumbles and recovered 2 fumbles.  McBride was a major reach by the Chiefs as much better players were on the board when the Chiefs picked him.

1. (23) Dwyane Bowe, WR

The Kansas City Chiefs have been without a legit #1 WR for a long time so they decided to try to fix that when they drafted Dwyane Bowe out of LSU.  Bowe has outstanding size at 6′2″, 222 pounds but he’s not really that fast as he runs a 4.55 40.  He however is a very tough, physical player who goes over the middle and he’s an excellent run blocker.  He’s very similar in playing style to Hines Ward of the Steelers.  In 50 games at LSU (30 starts), Bowe caught 154 passes for 2,403 yards (15.6 avg) with 26 TD grabs.  Bowe was an excellent pick for the Chiefs who hope he can be an impact player from Day #1.  I think they will be correct.

The Kansas City Chiefs invite Priest Holmes to Training Camp

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Big Chiefs News, General Chiefs Discussion by dawgpounded on Wednesday 9 May 2007 at 4:23 pm

The Chiefs have invited running back Priest Holmes to Training Camp after he missed all of last season with a neck injury.  The Chiefs could really use the Priest because Herman Edwards didn’t trust any of his other running backs and he rode Larry Johnson way too hard.  In 10 seasons in the NFL, Holmes has played in 109 games (80 starts) and he’s carried the football 1,734 times for 8,035 yards (4.6 ypc) with 86 TD runs.  He also caught 334 passes for 2,945 yards (8.8 avg) with 8 TD grabs.  Not bad numbers for an undrafted running back.
