Chiefs win on last second FG 30-27
The Chiefs had a rousing win at Arrowhead over the San Diego Chargers yesterday. Lester Tynes hit a 53-yard FG with 6 seconds let to seal the victory. QB Damon Huard was efficient again, completing 15 of 27 passes for 232 yards and 2 TDs. RB Larry Johnson carried the load again with 28 carries for 132 yards (4.7 ypc) and 2 TDs. Johnson also caught 2 passes for 29 yards. The Chiefs finally utilized TE Tony Gonzalez as he caught 6 passes for 138 yards. Gonzalez was not going down without a fight, often carrying defenders on his back for a ride! Eddie Kennison caught 2 passes for 30 yards and a TD. Converted TE Kris Wilson (now playing fullback) caught 2 passes for 13 yards and a TD.
S Greg Wesley and DE Jared Allen led the way on defense. Wesley had 8 tackles and an interception. Jared Allen had 2 tackles, 2 sacks and a fumble recovery! The Chargers carried the ball 23 times for 97 yards (4.2 ypc). The Chargers completed 26 of 44 passes for 252 net yards passing.
This was a huge win for the Chiefs after last week’s debacle in Pittsburgh!

The Charger’s comeback was not unforeseenable. The Chiefs almost and should’ve lost this one too. KC had the opportunity to go for the jugular at the end of the half. Instead, they chose to sit on the ball. Between that, the miss field goal and extra point, I knew that this game was far from over.
Unlike the Steelers of last week, the Chiefs folded tent and started to play conservative. This offense has shown that it still has some kick to it, but the powers that be insists on making this a conservative, smashed mouth, lack of killer instinct and grind it out offense. The defense played good, but again, they were exposed due to the Chief’s conservative 3 and out offense. That in turn weakened and wore out the defense, which eventually allowed the Chargers to comeback. The secondary is not young by any standards with Law, Surtain, Knight and Wesley. The line and the LB’s are young, but that’s not what’s getting exploited. This defense can not perform at the level that is required to shut offenses down at a pace dictated by a 3 and out offense. More and more teams are learning that they can stretch out this KC defense, hence the amount of big plays that the “D” is giving up.
Look for Seattle to do the same this coming weekend because the lack of a running game without Shaun Alexander. Seattle is also a team that gives KC fits throughout the years dating back to the original AFC West. KC should win this one, considering how banged up Seattle is and on the road, but probably will be another nail biter though.
I agree with you Mike about the conservative offense. Edwards should just let the guys play. Gonzalez, Kennison and Parker are good receivers and Huard should have earned his trust by now.
I do disagree with you about the defense. I think they are far below average and that’s why Edwards tries to shorten the game with his offense. Any team that allows 73 points in two weeks, is not a good defensive football team.
The Chiefs must take advantage of playing the Seahawks when they have to start Seneca Wallace and Maurice Morris instead of Matt Hesselbeck and Shaun Alexander.
