Chiefs explode on offense and win 35-28

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Monday 30 October 2006 at 6:52 am

Coach Edwards is finally figuring out that more players on his roster can make plays on offense.  Damon Huard completed 17 of 25 passes for 312 yards and a TD.  Larry Johnson had a monster game, carrying the ball 39 times for 155 yards (4.0 ypc) and 3 TDs!  Johnson also caught 2 passes for 26 yards and a TD.  Michael Bennett carried the ball 10 times for 38 yards (3.8 ypc) when Johnson needed a breather.  WR Eddie Kennison had his best game of the season, catching 6 passes for 132 yards.  TE Tony Gonzalez had his second huge game in a row with 6 receptions for 116 yards.

I know it sound funny, but the defense played pretty well despite allowing 28 points!  The Chiefs stuffed the Seahawks running game, holding them to 47 yards on 18 carries (2.6 ypc).  The Seahawks completed 15 of 30 passes for 193 net yards passing.

Damon Huard injured in practice

Damon Huard suffered an undisclosed injury at the end of practice yesterday casting his availability for Sunday’s game with the Seahawks in doubt.  If Huard can’t go, rookie Brodie Croyle would get the start….which could be a disaster.  Croyle has completed 3 of 7 passes this season for 23 yards and 2 INTs.

Chiefs vs. Seahawks

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,This Week's Matchup Report by ravenhater on Wednesday 25 October 2006 at 12:32 pm

The Chiefs have won 3 of their last 4 football games, while the Seahawks have lost two of their last three games.  When KC fans got their season tickets in the mail, I’m sure that this game stood out……..Larry Johnson vs. Shaun Alexander…….Trent Green vs. Matt Hasselbeck, but not all is bad for the KC fan in this game.  QB Seneca Wallace and Maurice Morris are the guys now trying to win the game in Seattle, and the outlook for them is bleak!

Don’t look for Mike Holmgren to change what the Seahawks like to do on offense.  The strength of the team as it stands right now is the WRs.  Look for the Seahawks to spread the field with Darrell Jackson (33 rec, 523 yards), Deion Branch (15 rec, 216 yards), DJ Hackett and Nate Burleson and let Seneca Wallace throw the ball in his first NFL start. It won’t be easy, because Arrowhead is a tough place to play and the Chiefs secondary is filled with veterans who will try to trick Wallace into making bad throws.  RB Maurice Morris (224 yards rushing, 3.1 ypc) had better give the offense a little balance or the pass rush will tee off on Wallace.  The Chiefs have had major problems stopping the run, allowing 123.7 yards rushing per game this season……so maybe the Seahawks will try to run the ball a little more than usual.

The Seahawks defense has been a little stingy against the run, but don’t look for Herman Edwards to change how he runs his team.  The Chiefs will probably feed the rock to Larry Johnson (489 yards rushing, 303 yards receiving) and take on the Seahawks linebacking corps.  Also look for the Chiefs to keep TE Tony Gonzalez involved in the offense after his huge game last week.  The Seahawks allow 225.5 yards passing per game and an opponents QB rating of 92.2, so maybe this is the week that Edwards opens it up a little bit.

The Chiefs should win this football game.  Seneca Wallace will have a hard time in his first NFL start if the Seahawks have trouble running the football.

Chiefs by the numbers

The Chiefs offense has been ultra-conservative for most of the season and averages 19.5 points per game.  The running game has never really fired on all cylinders as the Chiefs are only averaging 99.0 yards rushing per game and 3.5 yards per carry.  The passing game as been ok, averaging 195.5 net yards passing and completing 63.8% of their passes.

The Chiefs try to protect their over-rated defense with their conservative offense.  The Chiefs allow 20.7 points per game.  The run defense is terrible, allowing 123.7 yards per game and 4.1 yards per carry.  The pass defense allows 180.2 net yards passing per game and 61.8% completions.

Chiefs win on last second FG 30-27

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Monday 23 October 2006 at 10:57 am

The Chiefs had a rousing win at Arrowhead over the San Diego Chargers yesterday.  Lester Tynes hit a 53-yard FG with 6 seconds let to seal the victory.  QB Damon Huard was efficient again, completing 15 of 27 passes for 232 yards and 2 TDs.  RB Larry Johnson carried the load again with 28 carries for 132 yards (4.7 ypc) and 2 TDs.  Johnson also caught 2 passes for 29 yards.  The Chiefs finally utilized TE Tony Gonzalez as he caught 6 passes for 138 yards.  Gonzalez was not going down without a fight, often carrying defenders on his back for a ride!  Eddie Kennison caught 2 passes for 30 yards and a TD.  Converted TE Kris Wilson (now playing fullback) caught 2 passes for 13 yards and a TD.

S Greg Wesley and DE Jared Allen led the way on defense.  Wesley had 8 tackles and an interception.  Jared Allen had 2 tackles, 2 sacks and a fumble recovery!  The Chargers carried the ball 23 times for 97 yards (4.2 ypc).  The Chargers completed 26 of 44 passes for 252 net yards passing.

This was a huge win for the Chiefs after last week’s debacle in Pittsburgh!

Chiefs vs. Chargers

The Chargers have been flat-out dominating teams as of late.  After Coach Schottemheimer opened up the playbook, the offense has been awesome as they have scored 71 points in the last two weeks….both wins.  The Chiefs are coming off a game in which they got destroyed 45-7 by the Steelers.

Look for the Chargers to come out running the ball with LaDainian Tomlinson (407 yards rushing) and Michael Turner (277 yards rushing) against a run defense that is allowing 129.0 yards rushing and 4.0 yards per carry.  After the Chargers loosen up the Chiefs defense look for Philip Rivers to take some shots down the field to Eric Parker (18 rec, 274 yards), Keenan McCardell (16 rec, 178 yards) and Pro-Bowl TE Antonio Gates (18 rec, 255 yards).  The Chiefs are not really equipped to deal with a team with the firepower the Chargers have on offense.

Look for the Chiefs to play this one conservative……surprise there!  RB Larry Johnson (357 yards rushing, 3.4 ypc) should run into trouble with the Chargers run defense that is only allowing 71.6 yards rushing per game and 3.9 yards per carry.  The Chargers blitz very well and bring a lot of heat rushing the passer as they already have 21 sacks this season.  So Damon Huard will have to set up fast and get rid of the ball.  The Chargers only allow 142.8 yards per game passing, and they’ve intercepted 7 passes so far this season, so Huard will have to be careful.  This would be the perfect game to feed the ball to TE Tony Gonzalez (21 rec, 187 yards), the forgotten man of the offense.

The Chargers are a better football team than the Steelers are, and you saw last week what the Steelers did to the Chiefs.  It’s hard for me to imagine the Chiefs having much of a chance in this football game.  Playing at Arrowhead should help a little bit, but the Chargers are winning and covering the pointspread in this game.

Chiefs lose one player for the year and get another back for this week

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Injury Reports by ravenhater on Tuesday 17 October 2006 at 10:25 pm

Starting fullback Ronnie Cruz blew out his knee and will miss the season.  Back-up TE Kris Wilson will be the new starting fullback.  He should help the Chiefs out in the passing game immediately.  WR/KR Dante Hall is expected back Sunday after missing last weeks’ game with the Steelers with a sore hip.

Chiefs first round picks from the last two seasons play well on defense

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Tuesday 17 October 2006 at 9:25 am

The Chiefs last two first round picks look like players to build a defense around.  LB Derrick Johnson is the real deal.  Johnson is a really fast linebacker that can make plays sideline to sideline.  Johnson already has 33 tackles, 1.5 sacks and a fumble recovery.  This years first round pick, DE Tamba Hali has been much better than advertised.  Edwards decided to throw him right into the fire and he has responded well.  Hali has 25 tackles and 2.5 sacks.

Hardest division in the NFL

Think that oakland is doing bad? guess what Chiefs too. even if they got two wins, don’t matter SF don’t have notting to lose, neither do the cards. chiefs have something to lose in this division you have to win it all to get all no way teams that are playing like crap will earn that chance, specially in the west. i think now days playing conservitive won’t get you a w look at the other teams they score score score….. art shell? he should of stayed home. herm edward should of retired cause there is no such thing in running the ball on third and long….. and your down 30-0 and the defanse can’t even keep up. what the hell

Steelers dismantle the Chiefs 45-7

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Sunday 15 October 2006 at 8:55 pm

This game seemed like it was over after the Steelers first possession.  Now you see why Herman Edwards is so conservative on offense……to protect the lousy defense.  Damon Huard completed 16 of 32 passes for 162 yards and an interception.  Rookie Brodie Croyle got a chance to play, but I’m sure it didn’t help him confidence.  Croyle completed 3 of 7 passes for 23 yards and 2 INT, one of which was returned for a TD.  The Steelers keyed on Larry Johnson from the get-go, holding him to 26 yards on 15 carries (1.7 ypc) and a TD.  WR Samie Parker caught 5 passes for 72 yards and Eddie Kennison caught 3 passes for 57 yards.

The Chiefs defense got destroyed by the Steelers offense.  The Steelers ran the ball 42 times for 219 yards (5.2 ypc).  The Steelers also completed 17 of 20 passes for 238 net yards passing.

Herman Edwards needs to go to school and learn how to coach!
