Chiefs vs. Bengals

The Bengals will probably run the ball a little more often than usual the first couple of games.  The Bengals offensive line should face little resistance pounding the inerior of the Chiefs defense with Rudi Johnson.  After the Bengals soften up the defense, Carson Palmer will attack the Chiefs deep with Chad Johnson.  The Bengals should put up a lot of points on the Chiefs defense unless KC hogs the ball.

Herman Edwards is very conservative by nature.  He will probably run Larry Johnson as often as he can to keep his defense off the field.  The Bengals are missing their best defender, linebacker Odell Thurman, who is suspended for the first four games of the season.  I don’t think Edwards plan will work effectively, especially if the Bengals get a lead early.  The Bengals secondary loves to take chances, and they pick off alot of passes, but Trent Green is pretty good with protecting the football.

These two teams match up well, but if the game is close Chiefs fans will wish they had a different coach.  Herman Edwards tends to get out-coached badly in the last two minutes of a game.

Herman Edwards

What in the world are the Chiefs thinking?  Trading a 4th round pick for a coach with a 39-41 (48.8% wins) record.  Edwards is 2-3 in the post-season in his career and has won one division title.  Herman Edwards gets out-coached alot and will surely have Chiefs fans screaming at the TV.  He’s a horrible clock manager at the end of a game.

Trent Green has a career record of 52-47 (52.5% wins) as a starter and is 0-1 in the playoffs.  Green has a career QB rating of 88.3.

The Chiefs were un-impressive again.  At least the pre-season is over.  Damon Huard connected on 6 of 9 passes for 66 yards.  Rookie Brodie Croyle completed 5 of 9 passes for 55 yards with a pick-off.

Michael Bennett ran the ball 8 times for 29 yards (3.6 ypc).  McKenzi Smith carried the ball 12 times for 51 yards (4.3 ypc).

The Chiefs held the Saints to 81 yards rushing on 24 carries (3.4 ypc).  The Saints completed 63.2% of their passes for 225 net yards thru the air.
