Chiefs vs. Broncos

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, This Week's Matchup Report by ravenhater on Friday 15 September 2006 at 12:56 am

The Chiefs and Broncos are both run-first teams that had trouble last week.  The Chiefs will try to run the ball often against the Broncos who have a weak defensive line, but very active linebackers.  If the Chiefs have trouble running like they did last week, then the offense will be in trouble.  QB Damon Huard on his best day is a below average QB with a lack of arm strength.  Huard can scramble and that skill will help him behind a O-Line that has been weakened by age and retirement.

The Broncos will be running Tatum and Mike Bell at the Chiefs porous run defense.  As soon as the run is established, Plummer will throw play-action passes to Javon Walker and Rod Smith.  The Chiefs are going to try to hog the ball on offense, to keep their poor defense off the field.  If the Chiefs can contol the clock they have a chance in this game.  If the Chiefs can’t control the clock, they will get blown out by the Broncos.

Trent Green out at least 2 weeks

Trent Green will miss at least two weeks after the brutal (cheap?) shot by defensive end Robert Geathers of the Bengals.  Damon Huard will take over as the starter and the Chiefs will probably scale back the offense a little bit.  Huard does have good mobility and should be able to roll out as long as the O-line gives him time.

WR Rod Gardner signed to three year deal

This is a panic move by Herman Edwards and the front office.  Gardner has never been that good of a receiver and is no better than what they already have on the roster.  Gardner has played in 77 games (62 starts) and has caught 240 passes for 3,148 yards (13.1 avg) and 23 TDs.

Chiefs look horrible in home opening loss to Bengals 23-10

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page by ravenhater on Monday 11 September 2006 at 5:46 pm

The Chiefs were beat up and battered by the Bengals in Herman Edwards first game as head coach.  Trent Green completed 11 of 15 passes (73.3%) for 90 yards and a pick-off.  Green also carried the ball 4 times for 21 yards, but was knocked out of the game on a wicked hit by DE Robert Geathers as he was sliding.  Damon Huard came in and did ok, completing 12 of 20 passes (60%) for 140 yards and a TD.  RB Larry Johnson had 17 carries for 68 yards (4.0 ypc) and caught 5 passes for 80 yards (16.0 avg).  TE Tony Gonzalez caught 10 passes for 81 yards and a TD.

The Chiefs defense did not play as bad as most people thought they would in this game.  The Bengals rushed for 116 yards, but only averaged 3.4 yards per carry.  The Cats threw only 19 times, but completed 13 of them(68.4%) for only 120 net yards passing.

I hate to say this about Herman Edwards……but I told you so!
