Chiefs vs. 49ers

Blogged under Front Page, This Week's Matchup Report by ravenhater on Friday 29 September 2006 at 9:33 am

If the Chiefs don’t get their offense going against the 49ers this week, they might never get it going.  The Niners are allowing 28.3 points per game and the Chiefs are only averaging 8.0 points per game, so something has to give.

The Niners offense has been much better than anyone could have expected this season.  The Niners will look to run the football with Frank Gore (266 yards) and Michael Robinson against the Chiefs who are allowing 130.5 yards rushing per game.  Alex Smith (814 yards) will take some shots down the field against the Chiefs with Antonio Bryant (12 rec, 281 yards).  Smith should have time to throw as the Chiefs only have 1 sack this season.

Look for Larry Johnson (194 rush, 121 rec.) to be the focal point of the Chiefs offense.  The Niners are having trouble stopping the run (117.3 yards per game, 4.7 yards per carry), and the Chiefs want to keep the Niners offense off the field.  The Chiefs will probably keep the passes short (possibly in Tony Gonzalez direction) as the Cheifs are having trouble protecting the QB (8 sacks allowed).

This should be a good football game.  Reluctantly, I’m picking the Chiefs, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Niners win this game.

Bye week comes early, but that’s ok for Larry Johnson

Larry Johnson has got to be getting tired already.  Johnson has touched the football on 54 of the Chiefs 117 offensive plays this season.  Johnson has 315 combined yards this season (194 rushing and 121 receiving).  The Chiefs better play Michael Bennett more OR start passing more to give LJ a rest once in a while.

Tony Gonzalez has 12 catches for 88 yards and Eddie Kennison has 3 catches for 53 yards.  That is an example of why Herman Edwards’ is a horrible head coach.

Chiefs look bad again losing 9-6 in OT

Herman Edwards is an awful coach.  He played so conservative that the Broncos were handed a victory.  Damon Huard completed 17 of 23 passes (73.9%) for 133 yards.  RB Larry Johnson carried the ball 27 times for 126 yards (4.7 ypc) and caught 5 passes for 41 yards (8.2 avg).  WR Eddie Kennison caught 2 passes for 39 yards (19.5 avg).  Samie Parker caught 5 passes for 37 yards (7.4 avg).  TE Tony Gonzalez caught 2 passes for 7 yards.  Why in the world isn’t Edwards using Gonzalez?  Is he that stupid?

The Chiefs defense held the Broncos without a TD, so they did their job.  The Broncos rushed the ball 36 times for 145 yards (4.0 ypc).  The Broncos only completed 53.3% of their passes for 173 net yards in the air.

Too Conservative

I know Trent’s out for a few weeks and the coaches are trying to protect Huard, but that Denver game was ridiculous! This offense looks very stagnant, and blaming it on Roaf’s absent is not the excuse. The play calling is very questionable, particularily at the end of regulation. OK, you got the first down near mid field with LJ running, but then you go right back to him on 1st down and the clock running????? Maybe a screen pass to him or a flair pass to him near the sidelines with some blockers like the old days with Priest, that would’ve been better. Instead, the options was to run him up the middle and kill time as well as a time out with no gain. This offense has changed, and from the looks of the start of this season, for the worse. The conservative play calling got the starting QB almost decapitated and the rest of the offense a laughing stock of the NFL. If not for the Cincinnati defense playing prevent towards the end of the game last week, this offense would be shut out from the end zone.
I am a diehard Chiefs fan from childhood, but if this weak gameplan continues, this will be hard to continue to follow the team for this year. Even though I don’t live anywhere near KC or Missouri for that matter, I still make a trek every year to catch one or two of their games. Don’t think it will be worth my time or money to continue that trend this year, and unfortunately I don’t think I’m the only one that thinks like this either. I’ve noticed the dwindling numbers of followers and Chiefs jersy’s in the sports bars deep down in south Texas.
